Stampin' Up The Open Sea Masculine Birthday Card

 

Hi blogging friends,

I have a confession to make:  I really enjoy making Masculine Cards.  Alot of cardmakers say that is the hardest type of card to make, but due to the amount of men in my family/extended family, I have had to learn how to make them.  When you buy a card for a guy, it is really expensive, yet the cards are often just so simple - and I think that is the key - keeping it simple and not overthinking it or you might feel defeated before you even start.  

Start with a limited colour palette and choose a simple image.  You can even base your card around a sentiment - either stamped or diecut.  14 years ago, I made this card based around the sentiment for a cousin of my mother-in-law who lived in Wales and was turning 90:

I had no clue what this man's hobbies were or if he had any hobbies at all.  I had only met him once briefly when he came to Australia some years before so didn't really know him.  I opted for something simple and he loved the card so much, that he rang up to thank me personally - I mean, ringing from Wales to Australia wouldn't exactly be cheap - so I was especially chuffed.  I still think the card design works well for a masculine card and it is all based around the sentiment -  but the rest of the card elements work in harmony with each other which I think is important.  The only thing I would change now is the font on the sentiment because it is a little dated.

Some more ideas:  add some texture by using an embossing folder - or add some distressing.  Use a basic layout that you can replicate for multiple cards.  If you want to add ribbon, do a simple knot rather than a bow - or add string or twine.  I love to use grosgrain ribbon for it's texture.  If you like the layout, you don't need to reinvent the wheel - just use the same layout and your cards will all look different if you use different colours, stamps, designer papers, embossing folders etc.

I pulled out my all-time favourite masculine stamp set by Stampin' Up called The Open Sea which was first released in 2011.  It stayed in the catalogue for quite a few years because it was so popular and was eventually retired in 2016.  I would never be able to part with this set as it is just perfect for masculine cards.  You can do so much with the images in this stamp set.  Do a search on Pinterest and there are hundreds and hundreds of cards and you will get lost down a rabbit-hole as I often do on Pinterest............

First of all, I stamped the Ledger (the text image behind the ship) onto Cream Cardstock (from my stash) using Crumb Cake Ink but stamped off twice before stamping so it gave a faint impression.  Next, I stamped the ship using Night of Navy Ink.  The splotchy circles are from another retired set called Gorgeous Grunge which was first released in 2013.  I also stamped them in Crumb Cake Ink but stamped off twice.

I diecut the main image using a My Favorite Things Die-namics Pierced Circle STAX die and my Big Shot, then ink-blended around the edges using Crumb Cake Ink.

I diecut a circle from Crumb Cake Cardstock using a Lifestyle Nesting Circle Die, then ink-blended around the edges with Crumb Cake Ink.  I diecut another circle using a Pierced Circle STAX die from Kaisercraft Ink Cardstock and glued this underneath.

The designer papers are by Kaisercraft - High Tide - which was released in 2016.  You can still buy the 12 x 12 inch High Tide Paper Pads from Kaisercraft but not the smaller pad which is what I used for my card.  Kaisercraft has had some fantastic sea-beach-nautical themed releases over the years.  

The dry embossing was done using Crumb Cake Cardstock and a Kaisercraft Anchors Embossing Folder.  I ink-blended over the embossing using Crumb Cake Ink to make the anchors stand out more and to also tie in with the rest of the card.

The sentiment is from the back of the same Kaisercraft Paper Pad.  I added some Inque Boutique Brads which I thought matched the card really well.  Inque Boutique are no longer in business:  I think they closed around 2010.

The card base is Kaisercraft Ink Cardstock and the next layer up, Crumb Cake Cardstock - again ink blended with the same ink.

Once I had finished my card front, I glued it to a Kaisercraft White Card Base.

So, what do you think?  I was really pleased with how it turned out - and I am working hard on a few more designs using ship or beachy images.  Often, I like to stick to one theme for a few masculine cards until I am tired of it.

Waffle Flower Inquisitive Seagulls 21st Birthday Card

I made a Birthday Card for my great-niece who is turning 21.  When I turned 21 (quite some decades ago), things were vastly different.  I don't know that it holds the same meaning as back then(?).  I remember getting a large cardboard key that my work colleagues signed but I doubt anyone does that these days.  I also remember getting cards with keys on them that said I had now become an adult,  but I would never put that on a card today because technically (and legally in Australia), you are an adult when you turn 18.  

Anyway, I wanted to make a fun, gender-neutral card that completely steered away from all that those old-fashioned traditions, and here is what I made:

We Love Stamping - Summertime  What is more summery than seagulls on the beach!

Splitcoaststampers - Free for All Friday F4A857 - Me Time - What makes you happy?  What makes you want to create?  For me, it's spending time in my Craft Room away from the worries of the world and sharing a little piece of my heart in every card.  I think about the person I am creating the card for and tailor-make it to suit that person.

I have seen quite a few cards on Pinterest using the Waffle Flower Inquisitive Seagulls range so used those cards as inspiration for my card.

To do the sandy background, I used a piece of American Crafts Kraft Cardstock and stamped it with the dots stamp from the Waffle Flower Inquisitive Seagulls Stamp Set.  I used Stampin' Up Delightful Dijon Ink (sadly, retired) and did 2nd and 3rd generation stamping.  I ink-blended around the edges using the same ink but also added in some Stampin' Up Crumb Cake Ink to darken up the edges/corners.

The seagulls are from the matching Waffle Flower Inquisitive Seagulls Die Set which has two sizes of seagulls and the two beaks.  I diecut the seagulls using Ball & Doggett Knight White Cardstock, then diecut the eyes from a scrap of Black Cardstock.  The beaks were diecut from scraps of Pale Orange and a Darker Orange Cardstock - plus a scrap of Yellow Cardstock for the two smaller seagulls.  I glued the eyes and beaks on using Art Glitter Glue fitted with a fine nozzle.   I glued the seagulls to the card using Tombow Mono Multi Glue.  

I added some white highlights on the eyes and beaks using a White Gel Pen which really brought the seagulls to life.  Who hasn't had a seagull swoop down to steal your food?!  Or in the case of my card, they will be stealing the cake!

I used a Stamping Platform to stamp the sentiments in Versafine Onyx Black Ink so I could restamp several times to make them nice and dark.

I thought it would be fun to add another seagull on the inside of the card:

The sentiment is also from the Inquisitive Seagulls Stamp Set.

I was so pleased with how my card turned out - and I really hope it puts a smile on my great-niece's face.

Finished size is 4-1/2" x 6-1/8" or 114mm x 159mm.

I thought I would bring out one of my VERY old Stampin' Up Sets called Gift Tags.  Technically, the stamps are meant just for gift tags, but I love this sweet little teddy bear and I think it is perfect for a quick and easy card.  This set was released in the year 2000 and I managed to pick it up second-hand over 10 years ago.  It is such a sweet little set which has seen plenty of use over the years.  Stampin' Up currently have their Silly Old Bear Suite - but it is frustratingly not available in Australia.  I would LOVE to have another Teddy Bear Stamp Set like Button Bear. which was released in 1995.  The last teddy bear stamp that I remember Stampin' Up releasing was Baby Bear from 2016 so it has been far too long between bear releases!

I stamped the image (which already includes the sentiment) using Versafine Onyx Black Ink onto Ranger Watercolour Cardstock.  It was coloured using Zig Clean Color Real Brush Markers and a Zig Blender Pen.

I pulled out some retired Stampin' Up Designer Series Papers called 'A Cherry on Top' which was first released in June 2015.  I paired them with two now-retired colours:  Watermelon Wonder and Bermuda Bay.  I wanted my card to look very bright and cheery.  I wish I had bought more of these Designer Series Papers and are now down to just a few sheets 😞

I diecut the main image panel using my Big Shot and Stampin' Up Stylish Shapes Circle Die, then layered that onto a Spellbinders Petite Nesting Scalloped Circle Die.  

I tied on some Caribbean Twine then added 3 x Uniquely Creative Enamel Dots from their Choose Your Own Adventure which was released May 2021.  I added a dot of Art Glitter Glue underneath the enamel dots so they were more secure.  I am posting this card so those dots ain't going anywhere!

I used my EK Success Arrows Border Punch to punch some tiny hearts from Watermelon Cardstock - they are the leftover punchies that look like tiny hearts to me - then glued one either side of the sentiment.  

I added some Glossy Accents to the bear's heart

Final touches were Uniquely Creative Clear Sparkle Brush to the hearts beside the sentiment, teddy's bow and the present.

Once I had finished my card front, I glued it to a White Card Base using Tombow Mono Multi Glue.  I added some scraps of white cardstock underneath so the panel had a little bit of height.  I find this easier (and cheaper) then using foam pads - plus the glue gives me a little bit of wriggle time so I can get the panel exactly where I want it.  I can never get things straight when I use foam pads!

Finished size is:  4-1/2" x 4-1/2" or 114mm x 114mm.

Uniquely Creative Indigo Bloom Wedding Card

 

Hi everyone,

Today I am sharing a Wedding Card that I made for my daughter's friends.  I don't have alot of things in my stash for wedding cards and really didn't want to go for a white card as I didn't think it suited this couple.  The lady is so bright and bubbly and full of joy - she just glows - so I wanted to make something more colourful but was a little stumped.  Whilst looking through my stash, I realised that my Uniquely Creative Retailer Exclusive Kit would be perfect as the kit has two different cards and here is what I made:

I am popping this card into the Splitcoaststampers June Central Theme CT0626 Fan Club Challenge of 'A More Perfect Union'.  You have to be a member to play along in these challenges - but I highly recommend joining as you get loads of inspiration each month, suggested tutorials to spark your creativity, lots of support and encouragement and it's so nice to be a part of a fun group.  The central theme is open to your own interpretation so you can use it as a tool to jump-start your card.  I chose a Wedding Card as my interpretation but you could choose two colours that you love to create with or paper quilting - let your head go!

I based my layout on the suggested design from the Uniquely Creative Sheet but added quite a few touches of my own or altered some elements just to put my own spin on it.

The scalloped pink square on the card base was diecut using my Big Shot and Lifestyle Nesting Scalloped Squares Dies as I didn't have the Uniquely Creative Die listed in the instructions.  I also changed some of the flowers and added the Small Pink Paper Roses from my stash - plus more of the Uniquely Creative Delicate Lace Flowers.

I used my Uniquely Creative Fussy Cutting Scissors to fussy-cut some of the elements.  I LOVE these scissors because they are gentle on my arthritic hands.

I used a different sentiment from the kit because the one in the kit had the sentiment:  "lost in time" and used a Best Wishes Sentiment from a Uniquely Creative Cut-a-part Mini Sheet I found in my stash.

I used my Impression Obsession - Heart of Hearts Die to diecut some small hearts from Glitter Cardstock to dot around the card and thought that the blue and pink hearts next to the sentiment suited a Wedding Card.  I used Stampin' Up Dazzling Diamonds Glitter Cardstock and coloured it with Picked Raspberry Distress Ink to match the rest of the card.  The blue heart is from a scrap of Dark Blue Glitter Cardstock.

I had lots of fun layering all the elements together and learning along the way as this isn't a style of card I am used to making but gosh, I really enjoyed it.  I have been making myself get out of my comfort-zone whilst I have been on the Splitcoaststampers Dirty Dozen Design Team and it has really helped me be more brave and more creative.

I added some Uniquely Creative Clear Sparkle Brush to many areas of the card so it looks lovely and sparkly in real life - alas, not captured by the camera.

As a final touch, I glued on 3 x Clear Domed Gems around the card using Art Glitter Glue.  These were purchased from EBay Australia a few years ago.

Finished size is 135mm x 135mm or 5-5/16" x 5-5/16".

Docrafts Papermania - Lucy Cromwell Home Toppers Thank You Card

Today I am sharing a Thank You Card that I made for my grown-up daughter to say thank you for all the baking that she has been doing for me.  About 6 months ago, I had to make some dietary changes due to some newly discovered food intolerances.  I am feeling so much better - but it has been a steep learning curve and quite frustrating (at times) to learn how to modify recipes to accommodate those intolerances.  My daughter has always done alot of baking (which I instilled into her from a very young age because I have always baked just like my late Mother) and was up for the challenge - and she has been amazing at always making sure I have something yummy to eat.  So, I wanted to acknowledge my appreciation with a card:

Sorry the photo is a little dull.  It is Winter here and foggy so it is hard to take a decent photo when it is like that.  When I tried to brighten my card in my photo editing program, it made it look even more washed out.  Oh well!

• Neglected Stuff Challenge - June - Using OLD supplies that you forgot about.  Mine is the Card Topper which is more than 10 years old which I definitely forgot about it.  I found it when I was looking for something else which was serendipitous because I had it in the back of my mind to make a thank you card for my daughter for all her baking.

The main image is a topper by Docrafts - Papermania - Lucy Cromwell called 'Home'.  I bought this sheet of toppers years ago from a Craft Show so you probably can't get it anymore and I couldn't find this particular sheet in my online search.  All the toppers have some glittery elements on them and are just so pretty.  The image was just so perfect for what I needed.

I used to love going to Craft Shows and picking up the latest Docrafts range.  They had such amazing collections and my all-time favourite was the Wellington Bear range because it was fantastic for masculine cards.  I still use this collection because I stocked up and I am so glad that I did.  I am not sure what happened to Docrafts and haven't seen anything by them for a REALLY long time.  I think the whole cardmaking industry seems to be shrinking with many companies no longer around like My Favorite Things, Avery Elle and Impression Obsession to name a few: it's so sad 😞 Anyway, I am digressing.......back to my card........

All the designer papers are by Mintay - Elodie which were first released in February 2023.  I love how well they matched the topper.

The bottom panel Pink Cardstock was punched using a Martha Stewart Doily Lace Edge Punch.  I still adore this punch as much as the day I bought it.  It is so pretty and feminine.

The Silver-edged Pink Ribbon is from my stash.  I attached it in two separate elements and glued the bow on using Helmar's Fabric Glue.  I find it easier to do my ribbons that way because it isn't as fiddly and it looks alot neater.

The sentiment is by Crafter's Companion - Popcorn the Bear - Someone Special Stamp Set.  This is another old set released in the early 2010s and was bare rubber.  This is one of my favourites that I have used alot over the years.  I stamped the sentiment using Stampin' Up Gray Granite Ink as I didn't want to use black ink because it was too stark - and the Gray Granite Ink matched the rest of the card much better.

I used my EK Success Arrows Border Punch to punch some tiny hearts from Blue and Pink Cardstock - they are the leftover punches that look like tiny hearts to me - then added some Uniquely Creative Clear Glitter Brush to them for some sparkle.

The sentiment was diecut from White Cardstock using my Big Shot and a Cuttlebug Tiny Tag Die but trimmed it down.  These dies were first released in 2007 so very old now but one of my most-used dies.  You can still pick them up second-hand in my searches online - mostly on EBay.

When I had finished my card front, I glued it to a Kaisercraft White Card Base using Tombow Mono Multi Glue.

Finished size is:  152 x 107mm or 6-1/8 x 4-1/4".

Stampin' Up Leaf Collection Hello Card

Today I am sharing a card that I made for one of the lovely ladies in our Stampin' Up Class that we attend once a month:

 

I wanted to brighten my friend's day with a card plus a surprise gift that I am including.  I do love to send "happy mail" when someone least expects it.  Sure, it's lovely to get a birthday card (not that I get very many nowadays) - but it's so nice to receive a handmade card in the mail when you aren't expecting it.  I think it's sad that people just send a message on Facebook when it's your birthday.  It's like it's a cookie cutter social media task.  And to me, it feels so impersonal, robotic and obligatory rather than heartfelt.  I have been making a point in the last year to send out Thank You Cards and people really appreciate them.

I used the Joseph's Coat Technique which I only learned how to do last year - but it has been around for quite a long time.  First, I took a sheet of White Cardstock and randomly coloured splotches of ink all over it using my Ink Blending Tools fitted with a Domed Pad.  I used all Stampin' Up Inks in the colours Watermelon Wonder + Delightful Dijon (both retired) and Garden Green (still current).  I was really going for an Autumn feel because it is Autumn here where I live in Australia and the leaves are just starting to turn.  You don't have to be neat nor blend colours.  This is what the panel looked like after adding the inks - and doesn't it look like a hot mess?!!

I then heat-set the panel to make sure it was completely dry before moving onto the next step. 

I used a Powder Tool all over the panel then stamped my leaves using Versamark Watermark Ink.  The image is called Stampin' Up - Leaf Collection and is one solid stamp.  This a retired stamp, but one I absolutely LOVE.  I poured on Ranger Clear Detail Embossing Powder and heat-set it.  I went over all the panel with Versafine Clair Nocturne Ink and the embossed image resists the black ink.  I would definitely recommend disposable gloves for that part unless you like having black ink all over your hands!  

You then wipe over the panel using a piece of paper towel to remove the excess black ink off the embossed image.  And then the colourful image seems to magically appear which is why it is called Joseph's Coat.   It really amazes me how the ink colours change quite a bit.  You would not believe that it was Garden Green Ink as it looks more teal.  

I layered the panel onto Stampin' Up Crushed Curry Cardstock with a 1/16" border, then onto Black Cardstock with a 1/8" border which were done using my We R Memory Keepers Perfect Layer Guides.

The sentiment is also by Stampin' Up - Fabulous Sayings - which you could get for $9 in January once your order was over a certain amount - but it is actually still available when I checked tonight even though it is March.  I guess it will be available until sold out.  This is a really, really great set and definitely worth getting:

I stamped the sentiment using Versafine Onyx Black Ink onto Stampin' Up Very Vanilla Cardstock, then diecut it using my Big Shot and a Spellbinders Oval Nestabilities Die.  I layered this onto Crushed Curry Cardstock that was diecut using a Spellbinders Scalloped Oval Nestabilities Die.  I popped the panel up on scraps of cardstock.  

I added 5 x Clear Gems in 3 different sizes around the sentiment - 3 on the top RHS and 2 on the bottom LHS.  I used Art Glitter Glue to attach them because this glue dries completely clear.  I love how the clear gems look like drops of rain.

Lastly, I attached my card front to a Kaisercraft White Card Base using Tombow Mono Multi Glue.

I think you could use this card for lots of different occasions.

Stamperia Hortensia Birthday Card

 

Hi everyone,

Today I am sharing a Birthday Card that I made for my sister-in-law:

I used some gorgeous Stamperia Hortensia Designer Papers for my card.  These papers were released in 2020.  On one of the 12" x 12" sheets, there are four 6" x 6" individual card fronts and I simply trimmed one of them out but did cut it down a bit so that I could have some cardstock layers and then pop it onto a white card base.  I needed the finished card to be able to fit in my square envelope.

I used Versamark Watermark Ink to stamp the sentiment which is from the Stampin' Up Layering Leaves Stamp Set, then heat-set it using Ranger Detail Gold Embossing Powder.  I went around the edge of the designer paper using a Versamark Watermark Pen fairly roughly so that when I heat-set it with the Gold Embossing Powder, it looked a little distressed.  

I layered the image panel onto Pale Pink then Rose Pink Cardstock.  I watered down some Jo Sonja Pale Gold Acrylic Paint then used my Fan Brush to splatter the panel.  It looks so gorgeous in real life.

The Pink Organza Ribbon was attached in two separate elements, and the bow itself was made using my Bow Easy.  I glued the bow on using Helmar's Fabric Glue.  I added Fray Stop to the cut ends to stop them from fraying.

The pink butterfly above the sentiment is by Mintay - Lilac Garden - from their paper diecuts.  I glued down just the centre so I could bend the wings up a little.  The colours on the diecut matched the pinks in the designer papers so perfectly, it was just meant-to-be.  I added some Uniquely Creative Clear Sparkle Pen to the pink butterfly, the white butterfly and a little on the hydrangeas.

I glued the panel onto a White Card Base.

As a finishing touch, I added 3 x Kaisercraft Rose Pearls but added a dot of Art Glitter Glue underneath so they didn't slip down like they seem to over time (for me anyway).

Finished size is 5-11/16" x 5-11/16" or 143mm x 143mm.

Stampin' Up Wonderland Christmas Card

 

Hi everyone,

Today I am sharing my final Christmas Card that I made this Christmas season:

I pulled out one of all-time favourite Stampin' Up Sets called Wonderland which is retired but certainly one I could never part with.

To make my card, I ink-blended a piece of Bristol Smooth White Cardstock with Stampin' Up inks using Ranger Ink Blending Tools and Domed Pads.  The lighter blue is Soft Sky - sadly retired - and the other inks are Misty Moonlight and Night of Navy which are still current.  I did splatter the panel with some clean water just to add some a bit of extra-something to the sky.

I then stamped the trees using Night of Navy ink using 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation to add some depth.  I lightly went around the image using a bit more of the Night of Navy ink but not all the way around so I could leave the lighter areas.

I splattered the scene with some watered-down Schminke Opaque White  Watercolour Ink and a Fan Brush.  I glued on some Stampin' Up Loose White Snowflakes which are from late 2024 but are no longer available.  I used Helmar's 450 Quick Dry Adhesive to glue them on which is a really strong adhesive.

I then layered the panel onto Stampin' Up Misty Moonlight Cardstock and trimmed it to 1/8" using my We R Memory Keepers Perfect Layer Guides.

The sentiment was stamped using Night of Navy ink.  I used my Stamping Platform so I could get perfect placement, plus I needed to re-stamp it a few times to get a good impression.  I diecut it using a Spellbinders Labels Trio Die and my Big Shot.

To add some sparkle, I did dots of glue with my Quickie Glue Pen and sprinkled on Hero Arts Prisma Glitter.

Once I had finished my card front, I layered it onto a Kaisercraft White Card Base using Tombow Mono Multi glue.

I wish you could see the sparkle - it looks so pretty in real life.
